Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
There is nothing that disgusts me more than actors, musicians, and writers who talk a big game about charity and helping people, but when push comes to shove they would much rather just raise the money from other people or ask the government to take care of the problem for them. *coughMattDamoncough*
But then there are people like Angelina Jolie.
Whatever you feel about her politics (she seems ambivalent on the topic of Obama, unlike most Hollywood stars, and she’s a registered Independent and not at all ashamed of it and her dad is Jon Voight so…) you have to admire a woman who puts her money where her mouth is in both her personal and professional life.
She’s definitely not an armchair humanitarian:
Since 2001, Jolie has been on field missions around the world and met with refugees and internally displaced persons in more than 20 countries, including Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Cambodia, Pakistan, Thailand, Ecuador, Kosovo, Kenya, Namibia, Sri Lanka, North Caucasus, Jordan, Egypt, New Delhi, Costa Rica, Chad, Syria, and Iraq, to name a few, and most recently visited earthquake victims in Haiti on her latest trip to help survivors of conflict and natural disaster.
The Jolie-Pitt Foundation, dedicated to eradicating extreme rural poverty, protecting natural resources and conserving wildlife, donated $1 million to Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.
Angelina has been travelling to refugee camps around the world since filming Tomb Raider. During her missions she has visited places including Sudan’s war-torn Darfur, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and Tanzania. She also visited Afghan refugees in Pakistan and donated $1 million to help.
Jolie is known to cover all of her costs while on missions, and shares the working and living conditions as the UNHCR field staff.
According to tax records, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated more than $8 million to charity in 2006 alone.
She’s adopted 3 children from various different countries and last year she donated $50,000 (in honor of Malala Yousafzai) to an organization working for education of women and girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan and now she’s taken one more step and is using capitalism to work even more for education of women in the Middle East. Her new line of jewelry, the Style of Jolie, is going to send all of it’s profits toward funding (and building) schools for girls in Afghanistan.
Even though the Taliban is theoretically gone in Afghanistan, the group still regularly attacks schools where girls study and their influence (and the influence of Islam in general) can still be seen in a culture that often prevents girls from going to school because of stigma against it. A stigma that is obvious through much of the Middle East.
However, the more schools that are opened the better and kudos to Angelina Jolie for supporting this through her actions, her influence, and her money. It’s incredibly un-sexy when someone only gives lip service and “support” to a charity and Angie is definitely not an un-sexy person.
